Passport and Visa Requirements

Visa Requirements

All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda are required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

Visa Waiver Program

International visitors who need a visa to travel to the US must apply for one at an American embassy or consulate. The Visa Waiver Program lists the participating countries.

If you would like to request an invitation letter from AFP for your visa application, you must first register for AFP 2018. Once you register you will receive a registration confirmation email. Please forward this email, your full name, company name and mailing address to Customerservice@afponline.org to request your invitation letter. Invitation letters will be e-mailed to registrants only. Please allow seven to ten days for processing.

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) Scams

International travelers who are seeking to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program are now subject to security requirements and will be required to pay an administrative fee. Travelers should only use the official government site.

 

Currency and Rates

Currency

In Chicago, IL and throughout the United States, the dollar is the standard currency. This converter allows you to determine the value of other currencies compared with the dollar. Seaway National Bank can facilitate foreign currency exchange at either of its O'Hare International Airport locations (Main Hall of Terminal 2 or Lower Level of Terminal 5) as well as at its Midway International Airport location (Concourse A). Additionally, foreign currency exchange can be done at most local banks, hotels, and major attractions.

Goods and Service Taxes

  • San Diego Sales Tax Rate: 6.25% (in most areas)
  • Hotel Tax: 17.4%
 

Customs and Laws

Tipping

Tipping is voluntary; gratuities are not automatically added to the bill except in some cases for large groups.

Here are some tipping guidelines:

  • Servers – for good service 15%, for outstanding service 20%
  • Taxi Drivers - 15%
  • Doormen, Skycaps and Porters - $1 per bag
 

Electricity

The electricity used in Chicago, IL is standard electricity, which is 110 volts. Appliances brought from Europe, Africa and most of Asia and Latin America will require a voltage transformer.
